the wait

After years of trying to start a family.  We were led to adopt from China with the hope of bringing home a daughter as our first child but we didn’t know the plans.

For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.   Jeremiah 29:11CJ

While we waited for China, God nudged us towards domestic adoption.  We were uncertain about how far we should dive into that process.  So we did the bare minimum and left the rest to God.  9 months later we were blessed with a son.

Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us.  Ephesians 3:20


We were mostly content.  We had a son, and now we waited for our daughter.  We suspected we were being called to add more children to our family through adoptionGod added to our family but through pregnancy.

My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts, says the Lord. And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine. Isaiah 55:8 


As you can see, we are thankful for this long wait.  And yes, we still feel called to wait for our daughter in China.  We’re not exactly sure how or when we will find her but we do feel that He will show us her face when His time right.  So far His timing has been more than perfect

When we started this adoption journey we never imagined being blessed with two sons first. Their timings have been perfect.  We know our daughter’s will be too.  We are content in our waiting.

birthday countdown

We have officially started the birthday countdown (actually started last weekend).  Will & I made a chain for him to see how many days are left.  I’m not sure he gets it entirely but every morning when we pull one off he says something about it getting “taller”.  There’s a 2 on the bottom of the door and a 3 on the top and each morning he says I’m 2 but I will be 3 on my birthday.  We’ll see what he says when he’s actually 3.


Mister stuck to his guns for almost 6 weeks on that pink birthday cake and then declared that yellow was his favorite color.  But for 6 weeks it was all about the pink.  Pink cake with tractors, with dump trucks, with horses, with ponies, with Diego and then one day it was yellow with Diego and that was that.  I was kinda looking forward to a pink cake, oh well.

  • a basketball and hoop (the TV’s had a b’ball game on)
  • 3 cameras
  • 1 phone
  • and I don’t need anything else

Lucky for Will #1 is already purchased.  And he already owns the others in his toy box, probably even 3 cameras. 

He’ll tell anybody that will listen that he’s 2 now and will be 3 on his birthday.

it’s finally friday!

Wyatt started getting another cold this week (yes, separate from the RSV he’s had for the last 2 weeks, we even went to the dr).  It looked like he was also getting a fever SO we canceled his dedication that had been rescheduled for this Sunday.  At this rate he’ll be walking by the time he finally make it.

Now that it’s the weekend he’s seems okay and will probably be great by Sunday.  Better safe than sorry I suppose.   We’re praying next week is a healthy week for our household!

when do you correct someone?

It’s the old question… tell or not to tell…..Do you tell someone they have food stuck in their teeth? Or that their zippers undone?  That they have something hanging out of their nose?

Now we have a similar situation but at school….and it’s dealing with a more sensitive subject. 

One of the more friendlier moms is taken with Will.  She is always stopping Chris and gushing over Will.  Then one day she commented that he must look like his mom because he looks nothing like you.  Chris was kinda surprised with the comment and didn’t say anything.  On and off for months she has said this, then she started saying she wanted to adopt Will because he looks just like her boys.  I finally met her a few weeks ago and she gushed to me how adorable she thinks Will is and how she enjoys seeing him in the hallway every day.  She is super friendly. She didn’t mention wanting to adopt him to me, just that she wanted to take him home with her. 

Chris and I have talked repeatedly about his conversations with her and what, if anything, we should say.  This is truly a non-issue for us and don’t feel compelled to say anything to her.  But it’s just one of those things……when someone says they want to “adopt” your child… you tell or not tell? 

I was hoping we’d see her at the school program since all the grandparents were there.  Will and those brown eyes next to 6  sets of light eyed family members in a row.  She would be so confused.

This weekend Will had a sleepover with Mimi & Poppy.  He was very excited.  Though he was a bit confused since he thought he was going to the lake.  It has been awhile since he’s spent the night but he did great in his big boy bed there. 

His poor backpack was so heavy he couldn’t wear it.  All those “people” in there made it extra heavy.

He told us absolutely everything he did and had plenty of scars to prove the fun he had.  (Apparently he’s not ready for shorts just yet.)


Will was excited to see us Sunday but he wasn’t running to the car ready to go home.  We stayed for awhile and he played some more.  The boys made loops around the driveway in their red vehicles.


I wish I could say we had a lot of fun at home with just Wyatt but he was in a mood and screamed horribly all Saturday night (even when sleeping with us) and all day Sunday.  He never even took a nap he was so upset.  Now that his RSV is gone it looks like he’s teething.  It was a long 24 hours for us.  (thankfully he was happy outside) Probably a good thing Will wasn’t home.

all-around competition

Will takes gymnastics at school.  Yes, it’s an elective but we figured Will would enjoy it and get some extra energy out on Fridays.  So far he has a lot of fun, talks about it but we’ve yet to see any tricks.  In case you didn’t catch the video (sorry for those that read at work, the videos are blocked) let me re-cap Will’s talent.  We started with a couple of warm ups and dances.  Will refused to participate.  Then they did some push-ups, Will has form, that’s for sure!  Next up was the beam.  Walking on the balance beam was Will’s best “event”.  He was one of the only kids who didn’t need their arms to walk across and he rarely fell off, we were proud.  Could be because he sprinted down it, but we’re declaring that his best event.  His next best event, and probably his favorite, is the trampoline.  I believe he bounced on it way more than he was suppose to, guess he’ll have to take a penalty deduction on his final score for that.  After the trampoline is where it takes an interesting turn.  Will didn’t like to wait for his teachers to assist him on the roll down the hill, nope, he just hurled himself headfirst on the mat and hoped for the best.  Usually that meant falling off the hill.  Didn’t deter him though, he’d quickly cut line and to do it again, and again, and again.  We were crying in the back row laughing at him.  Thank goodness he wasn’t paying any attention to us.  All the other kids followed the routine and quietly went back in line to start again but not our Wilson, he just cut to the nearest trampoline and started the vicious somersault routine over again.

And for those that saw the video, did you catch the part where Will saw the trophies and begged the assistant for one early.  We were proud.  He was impressed with his “one-one” trophy and even more impressed with the mirror on the back.

we’re still here…

Wyatt is slowing getting better.  Today has been his best day since he got sick last week but he’s still not ready to go back to school.  Hopefully Monday!

Despite being sick he’s acting like he wants to crawl or pull up.  He’s so antsy just sitting there.  He’s reaching for everything and wants to be on the move.  I’d guess in the next week or two we’ll have a mover and shaker on our hands….

the week in review

We started out last week with the kids spring school program on Monday night.  Tuesday started with taking Wyatt to the dr for a fever, turns out he had an ear infection. By Thursday we suspected there was more going on because he was only getting worse, not better, on antibiotics. Friday morning we went back to the dr to find out he had a pretty bad case of RSV.  The doctor was concerned since his lungs sounded so bad but thankfully he was “well” enough not to go to the hospital. Saturday he was so much better. So I think Thurs/Fri were the worst of it. He is certainly not better today but has improved from last week. I’m not sure how long he’ll be out sick this week, but so far he’s loving his extra time with us and his Aunt Karen and Mimi.

With all of the sickness we had to cancel his dedication that was scheduled for Sunday. But I did force him to put on his outfit for some pictures. (he was feeling good at the time, I’m not that mean) Hopefully we can reschedule while the outfit still fits. ahem, not that it’s all about the outfit…..

Routine of a Lifetime

I think Julie has mentioned that Will has been taking gymnastics at daycare. This past Friday we were treated to his class' first program. It lasted less than 30 minutes, and let's just say, as evidenced by the video below, that Will prefers to follow more of an improv approach than any scripted routine. Maybe he feels a script limits his ability to give a true performance?!? I went through and chose about 3 minutes' worth of highlights to share. So without further adieu...

4 days!

I haven’t taken a picture in 4 days, that must be some kind of record.  And I can’t blog without a picture so I guess I don’t have anything to say.

Wyatt has an ear infection, we went to the dr 4 days ago.  I guess that explains the lack of pictures.  Today seems to be the worst day so far.  His coughing and wheezing are starting to concern me.  We’ll see what happens tonight. 

He’s been sleeping with us for 4 days now.  No one is getting a lot of sleep.  Well, Wyatt is sleeping good.  That is until he slides off his incline and we have to prop him back up.  But he stays mostly asleep as long as he’s propped up.

Wyatt’s dedication is suppose to be Sunday.  We’re praying he’ll be well enough by then.

And in case you wondering why the increase in videos….Chris got a new video camera and loves using it these days.  Hopefully the nature videos will be few and far between….if you like bird watching you can just email him, I’m sure he’d be happy to share more of those.

where will the ducks live?

On our way home tonight we passed the place the ducks hang out and noticed a lot of ducks in the road (appropriately, right next to the duck crossing sign) and Will asked why the ducks were in the road so I explained that it had rained really hard and the creek was really rough right now so they were probably waiting for their home to dry out.  He said “Oh”.  A few minutes later he said “I have an idea.  They can come live in my playhouse and I’ll show them how to go down the slide and up the ladder and up the rock wall. AND then they can use my lawn mower and cut the grass.”  End of discussion. 

I love seeing how his brain is putting things together and coming up with his own ideas.

Will & Wyatt's Spring Program

A few weeks ago we went to the GI and the flat head doctor.  Wyatt weighed 22lbs 1 oz and was 28 inches tall.  Nothing new at the GI doctor, paid to get weighed and measured.  And the other doctor said his head is still flat and will probably never be symmetrical but does look better.  We go back to both doctors in a few months.

He’s still wearing size 3 diapers but really should be in 4’s.  I have one pack left of 3’s and then we’ll move up.  He’s definitely done with 6-12 month clothes.  But he can wear some 9m and everything else is 12m or 12-18.  I tried Will’s old summer clothes and none fit!  Good thing consignment sales are coming up.

He’s still not sleeping thru the night.  He does occasionally if he has a good day (teething wise) and gets 2 really long naps in.  But most nights we get up with him once or twice.  Unfortunately, we have discovered he sleeps SO soundly if he’s in bed with us.  Some nights when we are both beyond exhausted we bring him in bed with us and everyone sleeps good.  I’m afraid if we’re going to end up with a kid in our bed permanently if we’re not careful. 

Wyatt finally likes being on his belly and he pushes up really good.  So there is hope that he will crawl.  His legs are really strong too and does great when you stand him up.  I imagine this month he’ll figure out how to pull up or crawl. 

This month he started taking big boy baths with Will.  Not sure Will is a fan but Wyatt LOVES it.  He splashes like crazy and soaks all of us.  Wyatt is a grabber.  He will take anything and everything out of your hands.  I guess he’s going to be a good match for Will. 2011-02-27 (20)

He’s eating more and more food now.  He prefers food to bottles so it’s a struggle to get him to take more than 3-4 oz.  Soon enough he’ll be on all food. Still no apples or green beans, we tried them several times by accident and the results were not good.  We’ve got to find a few more new things because everything he eats is orange/yellow at the moment. 

Teeth – I’ve talked about them a million times in the last week but it’s been awful.  He has 3 on top and 4 on bottom. 

Coming up this month, Wyatt gets dedicated (well, I should say the parent dedication for Wyatt)….

I was in a hurry to take the picture and knew this would be my only chance for a few days. The lighting is awful and I was too lazy to swap out chairs and get Wyatt’s real chair. Oh well….

Betsy's nap time...

Will LOVES to play naptime.  If someone gets anywhere near our bed he declares it naptime and begs to cover them up.  He goes through the whole routine…..pillow, blanket, lights off, music on… then tells everyone to be quiet and to go to sleep. Then he runs in and out of the room checking on us.  He got Chris today, then decided he wanted to join him and then Betsy joined in the fun.  He begrudgingly let Wyatt join. 


Apparently head pats are part of the naptime routine.


Then Will decided he wanted to sing everyone a song.  But that ended quickly when Wyatt wanted to help play the guitar.

sooner or later he'll come around....

Last night during dinner we asked Will if he wanted to have a baby sister. Pretty much without hesitation, he said, "No; I just want Wyatt."

We then asked if he wanted a sister that wasn't a baby. He still had the same response.

One of these days he'll (hopefully) warm up to the idea and we'll all be on the same page. We've still got Plenty of time for that to happen....

sunday story

I wish I have a few more brain cells available to write more than a few sentences but this teething business is keeping me up at night.

We were ready 5 minutes early for church and everyone was already sitting on the stairs when I quickly grabbed a picture. 

Will came home from Sunday School a few weeks ago and (re)told us the bible story they had learned.  I’m sure I’m retelling it wrong (Chris will probably correct me) but it was something like Jesus saw a girl in bed and made her better and she stayed in bed.  We got a laugh out of his version of the story.  2011-02-27a (2)
